I have gone through three 3 Brunton SOLO 15 s so far They are junk So promising yet so disappointing if you are hoping to use them with a laptop
I used them with a PC laptop and a Macbook Pro They work much better with a Macbook Pro but even that killed one after while I have a PC laptop HP dv6000 series with an 8 8 amp hour lithium battery extended battery This PC laptop can kill a SOLO 15 after the first use
I m guessing the SOLO 15 would be perfect for an Ipod Nano or a regular cell phone but definitely not as a backup for a laptop The problem seems to be when you discharge them too much That is unavoidable if you are charging up a laptop unless you want to stand nearby to check the battery level on the SOLO 15 every five minutes in order to disconnect it when it gets down to one bar of power
Contrary to what some sales people claim about these batteries on other web sites selling these units they say it can power a laptop for 6 hours a laptop can drain a SOLO 15 completely within about 90 minutes and then it s slowly damaging the SOLO 15 by draining it too far Apparently they do not have circuitry to prevent over discharging
It can indeed provide 6 extra hours of power to a Macbook Pro if the Macbook Pro it turned off and the SOLO 15 is hooked up and recharging the Mac s internal battery But it s a gamble because sooner or later the SOLO 15 will be drained too much and will not be the same afterward
I disagree with the other reviewer who said these batteries can be drained down to nothing without hurting them I think that is what hurts them most but that is unavoidable It will happen eventually and then you ve thrown 300 down the drain
The lesson I learned is to ONLY use batteries for recharging that are well protected from over discharging
>> Will soon have two of these First one fried on first day of use I ordered a Brunton SOLO 15 hoping it would be the perfect portable power pack for keeping a laptop going for a few hours in my LR3 Land Rover Land Rovers do not provide 12V power unless the engine is running so you need to have a power pack s in the vehicle The big attraction of the SOLO 15 was the small size and low weight 4 pounds I m getting tired of lugging around the big jump starter packs containing lead acid batteries so the SOLO 15 was particularly attractive because it is definitely the lightest power pack available with that same amount of juice It s also small enough to stash under the back seats of a Land Rover and it easily fits in a small backpack too
Because it is a lithium pack rather than a lead acid pack you won t hurt it at all if it drains down to empty Whereas if you do that to a lead acid battery it won t hold nearly the same charge from that point forward Lithium polymer technology for rechargeable batteries is excellent in every technical parameter and this Brunton device seemed to make the cost of that technology very competitive with other types of batteries like lead acid Soooo if the flaws get worked out with the SOLO 15 then it will be something really special
I received my first Brunton SOLO 15 last week from Amazon It looked great and its package included an array of sturdy cables connectors and a nice quiet little inverter unit that is not built in to the battery That was a good idea really because that means you can use a different inverter if necessary Inverters will sometimes fry or debris will get into the cooling fan and make noise etc Good idea to keep the two components separate if you re wanting the most dependable system you can put together
I would have expected the inverter to be the weak link in the chain but it s the battery pack that is so flawed
I charged it up overnight It had a full charge when I started using it and it did keep my laptop going for a few hours as expected But when the power output level eventually started dropping I pushed the button on the face of the unit to show the battery level while the unit was still plugged in to the laptop the manual says you can do that then all the LEDs flashed at once and then went out completely
I tried charging up the unit overnight again and it won t hold a charge now The green LED s showing the battery level do not work at all I would have been willing to live with it if the green LEDs merely didn t work I would have simply used my multimeter to check the batter level But the whole unit is fried Nothing works
I did not expect this to happen with an expensive lithium based power pack Obviously there s some weak parts in the main circuit board based on my own experience and what I gleaned from other reviews The Chinese manufacturers apparently didn t test these devices enough not as much as an American manufacturer would have done before mass producing them The current iteration of SOLO 15 battery packs might work but might have to be treated with kit gloves Thankfully Amazon s return policy makes it easy for me to send back the unit and receive a replacement without having to wait very long
While I m waiting I ordered another SOLO 15 pack I planned on getting two of them originally I want to make very sure that I m not throwing out the baby with the bath water I want to give these little devices a chance and just assume I got a bad one So I ll soon have two brand new ones I m going to use them both a lot in the first 30 days to see if they fry before I am unable to get a refund
I also ordered a Brunton Solar Panel 15 watt and have received it and tested it a bit with a multimeter
As with the Brunton SOLO 15 battery pack the solar panel looks great and it comes with nice sturdy cables and connectors and it kicks out a lot of power for its size The only flaw I have found with this panel is the power cord specifically where it enters into the frame of the solar panel The cord is very vulnerable and unprotected at that protruding part of the frame It will fray and break eventually if the panel is moved around a lot
I will be taking the solar panel s in and out of vehicles a lot and bumping them around and driving down bad roads with them etc so the vulnerable point of the cord needed to be reinforced somehow I had to create and attach my own protector bracket in back of where the power cable enters the frame to make sure the cord does not get tugged at that point The cord is ALREADY starting to show the slight signs of weakening and fraying from too much bending and pulling and that was after the first day of using it The outer sheath has pulled away exposing the red and black wires of the power cord Both wires are slighty kinked from having been tugged along the edge of the entry point into the frame
My sense is the solar panel will not fail if the power cord does not fail That would be nice Keeping my fingers crossed
Update on the Brunton experiments
First regarding Brunton solar panels
I have removed the two 15 Watt solar panels from my vehicle and replaced them with one Solaris 52 I ve tested them side by side in the bright California sun for a few days now The Solaris 52 is fantastic It is much better than 2 of the 15 Watt panels side by side To think I d need four 4 of those 15 watt panels to equal the output of one Solaris 52 The Solaris 52 is expensive 650 but it is so versatile and stashable and powerful that I can t imagine being without one now I ve recently ordered a second one
Regarding the Brunton SOLO 15 battery They are a bit too delicate
One problem for Brunton is that some web sites claim the SOLO 15 battery can be used to power a laptop They are really not designed for that They can recharge a laptop pretty well but running the laptop while the laptop battery is being recharged tends to drain it very quickly and possibly even hurt it Better off letting it recharge a laptop battery with the laptop off then unhooking it from the laptop when running the laptop
The bigger problem is something Brunton will need to address with a little slip of paper included in the box a slip of paper warning users that although the manual claims you can power a device with the SOLO 15 while the SOLO 15 is being recharged that can easily ruin these batteries if you re powering a laptop The folks at Brunton can check this themselves I have damaged two of these batteries now by doing that Powering a laptop while the SOLO 15 was being recharged by another 12v battery pack The first time I was using the little included inverter The second time I was powering a laptop with a 12v car adapter for the laptop
After you use it that way the battery may still show that is has a charge but it won t take a charge anymore The red LED does not even come on and the little LED on the Brunton AC charger is blinking indicating that there s a problem charging the battery I know that is what it means because I have two batteries and two AC chargers so I can swap the charges between the one SOLO 15 that still works and the one that is malfunctioning
The absolute ideal portable laptop battery would be about the same size and shape as the SOLO 15 with perhaps more power but better fault protection even if that means accessible fuses They should also consider adding a liquid crystal screen that could show charge level and whether the input current or output current is too much or too little Then it would be the perfect small portable 12v battery for taking into the field or even taking around the house or the yard where there might be no AC outlets

LifeSpan Fitness EL3000i Elliptical Trainer >> Do NOT buy this elliptical I bought this elliptical back in January It was on sale for and had a great price for the features it offers I used it for about 20 minutes and started to hear a noise coming from the back wheel Within an hour of use 3 20 minute sessions I had a lot of black specs on the ground next to the left rail left side when standing on it The wheel was rubbing on the side of the housing and pieces of the wheel were getting shaved off Within another 30 minutes of use it was so loud I couldn t hear the TV 1st fix Tech support mailed me a new wheel I put that on 30 minutes later the noise was back 2nd fix Tech support mailed a bunch of parts and sent service out 30 minutes later the noise was back 3rd fix Tech support mailed even MORE parts and sent service out 20 minutes later not only was the noise back but the resistance no longer worked and there were more noises coming from the inside of the machine 4th fix Mailed me a new elliptical my responsibility to get rid of the old one 30 minutes on the new one same noise same problem 70 minutes later it is so loud again I can t use it
It is now 4 months later I have 2 non working ellipticals in my apartment and still waiting for tech support to call me back with what they are going to do
Very frustrated and still no working machine >> Not a Good Elliptical The machine is not well made There was a problem with the wheel that made it too difficult to paddle even on level one there was a resistant that we could not paddle for 5 min I believed I got the returned product delivered There was no manual in the package We returned the item and Amazon shiped a replacement within one week The second one had noise in the wheel box from time to time The noise started clicking when I started the machine and went off after few minutes and started again and it happened only on the right side So I decided this is not what I want and returned it back to Amazon After all it is not the good buy but Amazon did make the return easy as promised >> OK but not the best buy Some of the other reviews look like commercials to me I doubt they are from actual users The good things about the machine is that it is not too big and simple to use Here are the cons 1 It has some noises from the wheel area from time to time 2 There is no mentioning at least I did not find where in the installation manual of where to plug in the AC adapter or how to use the extended leveling devices 3 I wish there is a lock in the machine I have two little kids and they can easily hurt their fingers or arms if they try to play with it When someone is using it be absolutely sure that little kids don t get close it can easily break an arm if one tries to insert his/her arm into the moving parts Later I looked at other models and they don t look as dangerous 4 I wish the screws/nuts/washers were packaged in a separate bag instead of pre installed and taken out when I started to assemble it One washer fell into the big hole next to it when I was unscrewing it 5 I think the Amazon sale price of this item 849 is still very pricy compared with other models I looked at The so called regular price is just for dummies like me who think the sale price is a good bargain

I dislike exercise However I thought it was time to get a bit healthier I forced myself to buy a bike and surprisingly I find myself actually enjoying the exercise time I ve pedaled with MP3 player cranking some tunes and with a PSP playing TV shows
My only complaint is that the seat is a bit hard after 30 minutes of working out My wife has not complained though I do like the lumbar support in the seat back Subtle but effective

I have had the bike for almost 2 months and I use it 5 6 times a week about 30 45 min at a time and so far there have been no issues I have it set up in my front room so I can easily watch TV or play video games while riding which makes the workouts fly by I have been surprised how quiet the bike is If I place the resistance setting about 7 or above and have my apartment completely silent I can hear an incredibly faint noise coming from the bike but as I always have something audio on while I ride it is a complete non issue to me
Originally I was very hesitant about buying an exercise bike online because when I would try them out in stores sometimes I wouldn t fit because I am 6 5 But with this bike I don t even have the seat all the way back and I fit great However my girlfriend is just under 5 tall and the seat doesn t go close enough for her so if you are right around that height keep that in mind
Like other reviewers mentioned the bike took me about 1 5 hours to put together alone I took my time in order to not smash any of the wiring and to make sure I only had to do it once I imagine with 2 people it would be faster

Body Max XRM7000 Electromagnetic Recumbent Exercise Bike >> overall a good deal I got it and it weighed a ton A few of the plastic parts were busted but the factory replaced them when I called The instrument panel mount isn t firm it wiggles There is a clunking sound in the front bearing Otherwise My wife really likes it and it does all the things a bike in a pro gym would do >> Not Bad For A Home Gym Item I purchased this item as part of a gold box promotion The bike is nearly fully assembled It took about half an hour to get it assembled The instructions for both assembly and operation are not very good There is an addendum at least in mine packed in the instruction book It is very unclear What I painfully discovered is that the lever that tightens the seat position needs to be adjusted before mounting the seat If you don t get it in exactly the right place the seat has to be removed before you can lock the seat into position
In terms of operation the bike has a few issues The center column is impossible to keep tight so the console wobbles The pulse monitoring sensors almost never work The eddy current resistence works very well The seat and the bike itself are rugged and heavy 120 lbs 60 kg Parts do tend to loosen and the connections between them are not well thought out
For the money when it was on sale this exercise bike is a good deal The console display is very similar to the ones I have seen in gyms The bike has some good pre programmed exercise routines
Just be aware that this bike will need periodic tightening This is a home machine and is not as rugged as the exercise bikes found in the typical gym

Overall this watch is a nice option to have to use for a variety of different events I like the stealth negative display look If you re a fan of that look then this is the watch for you If you re not then its brothers in the 1500 series will suffice

I was looking for a large faced aviator watch and saw many models from Citizen and Seiko This model has a large 48mm diameter face which really catches the eye The case thickness at 12mm is also not too thick which was one of my concerns with other large faces watches It has 4 separate knobs/buttons which have a low profile but are smooth and well finished The buttons on the right do not dig into your hand like other watches with large knobs The grooved ring around the face of the watch really adds a lot of BLING that is not overwhelming and very classy
The watch has an good weight to it so you better like heavy watches It screams quality whenever you look at it closely and press the buttons The perpetual calendar ensures that you never need to change the date for different months and leap years The dual time function allows you to display the time in another time zone that is in 1 hour increments Unfortunately it will not display time zones in 30 min increments so if your second time zone is 4 5 hours behind your main time zone then the watch would not be able to display the exact time in the second time zone You have to either set it at 4 hours or 5 hours apart from the first time zone
The alarm and chronograph are selected by rotated the crown to select the desired function The Alarm rings for 15 seconds and is audible if the watch is near to you The chronograph can measure time up to 59 minutes and 59 seconds with an accuracy of 1/20 of a second
The slide rule allows you to do calculations such as ratios multiplication division and percentages You can also convert from metric to imperial units by simply moving the dial on the left to the desired position You will have to download a manual to learn the slide rule Even if you don t want to use it you will find that the slide rule makes the watch look refined and technical I supposed the sliderule could have been implemented as a rotating bezel as on other watches but this model uses a rotating knob This adds an extra knob to the watch but ensures that the sliderule is under the glass and not exposed I think this is more classe that having sliderules tachymeters etc that are exposed on the outer ring of the watch as rotating bezels

For those who did not read the review I did of my first Ultimate Seal model 8251 I will recap some of the new features of the Luminox EVO Ultimate Seal collection The Evo Ultimate series has come a long way from the original plastic Luminox I remember years back I cant believe it is the same company and it isn t kind of The EVO stands for evolution and marks the new products from Luminox since the merger with the Mondaine Watch Ltd Swiss company This is a huge step for Luminox taking their watches more upscale Pricier but better No gratuitous military logos across the face A honest to goodness professional rugged tritium timepiece The watch is very solidly built out of stainless steel with excellent machining details over the entire watch The case itself is made out of stainless steel that is coated with a satin PVD plating It is very tough So tough that when I was adjusting the bracelet my tool slipped with great force across the link and did not leave a mark What ever Luminox is using for their PVD plating its almost scratch proof That being said PVD will eventually get scratched if you use the watch so be prepared to live with the scratch or use a black sharpie marker to touch it up All of the edges are debured for a snag free feel very nice The stainless steel bezel has a striking two tone metallic silver finish contrasting in satin and flat mat The bezel clicks very firmly and solidly in a unidirectional direction It is machined to have excellent grip for turning underwater or with gloves on The bezel will not be unintentionally turned The back of the watch has screw down polished stainless steel lid It is smooth and very comfortable The watch face has a anti reflective scratch resistant sapphire crystal This is the best you could ask for at any price point It is crystal clear So clear you have to tap on the face of the watch to see if there is anything protecting the display
The CHRONOGRAPH model The Luminox EVO Ultimate Seal Chronograph model 8352 and 8351
The 8352 and 8351 are the same watch other than the 8352 comes with a steel two tone bracelet and the 8351 comes with a rubber strap with double prong buckle
The bracelet is very solidly built out of solid stainless steel links with a two tone PVD plating and a satin stainless steel dog bone design It is very heavy duty weighing in at 100 gr Just for the bracelet alone It has a safety clasp with divers extension The under side is very smooth and does not pull hair on the arm See at bottom for Tips and tricks on adjusting this type of bracelet The watch is heavy but wears very balanced on the wrist
The Chronograph uses the excellent RONDA 5050 B Big Date movement The USERS GUIDE and operation instructions and chronograph hand calibration info can be found here
The chronograph uses 3 dial set up that counts the 1/10 second second minute and hour up to 12 hours The small dial by the 3 o clock position is the second hand for the general time The large second hand is for use in chronograph mode
When starting the chrono the large second hand and 1/10th hand jumps to life The 1/10th hand spins one revolution every second After 30 seconds the 1/10th hand stops moving but is counting internally When you stop the chronograph the 1/10th second hand jumps to the correct position Very cool The Chronograph has Accumulative timing and Intermediate or interval timing All of the hands and markers in small and large dial line up perfectly Very high quality feature
The date is displayed at the 6 oclock position using a large split digit window This is exclusive to only the Chronograph
The only labeling on the dial is the Luminox crest at the top and PROFESSIONAL DIVER between the 3 and 4 o clock
The chronographs size makes it easy to read and the crisp dial it first rate
The entire watch oozes quality and rock solid build construction 54 month battery life with End Of battery Life feature It s easy to read the dial In any light condition it is easy to see the time at any angle of the watch face Tritium markers glow brilliantly in green with the 12 o clock in yellow The bezel 12 o clock glows in green The watch is idiot proof to read in low or no light situations Accuracy has been stellar so far at 0 or seconds In my experience typical of the new EVO series
The style of the watch is upscale enough to be used for any occasion It has great wrist presence It feels like a tank on the wrist and should be a excellent choice for serious diver hunters climbers/explorers The Luminox professional series are just that The Ultimate Seal

I also bought the rubber strap that is found on the 8351 The quality is excellent and will lighten up the watch for other activities
Note to owners The hands can be easily calibrated It uses a Ronda 5050 B movement Pull crown to the 3rd spot then hold both top and lower buttons in for 2 seconds At this point the lower button pics the dial to be calibrated and the top button advances the hand 1 click at a time When you have corrected the positions of the hands push the crown in and you are ready to go Most Chronographs need to be corrected because of battery change Luminox SHOULD have this in their operating instructions but they dont
Tips and Tricks for adjusting the Dog bone bracelet
The only thing I do not like about this bracelet is the way the links are removed for adjustment The bracelet uses a friction pin set up The back of the bracelet has arrows on each link that can be removed The arrows point the direction the pins are to be pushed out Some are in very snug and some are not as snug as they should be I have a 15 year old Tag Heuer that uses this design and I found a sure fire trick to making the pins so they wont ever fall out accidentally For all links that have removable pins I use clear coat touch up paint that is used for cars I push all the pins out half way brush a little clear coat paint on them and push them back I then wipe the excess paint off the end of the links This acts like a thread locker and the pins wont ever vibrate out They still can be removed for later adjustment if need be just re apply clear coat paint when finished Clear nail polish also works but is not a temperature stable as clear coat touch up paint that you can get at any automotive store Duplicolor is what I used >> Great Watch I ordered this watch after looking for a chronograph for several months It more than exceeds my expections Its rugged keeps great time and looks great However it is not for those that like a thin piece of gold jewelery It is heavy but not uncomfortable It has a large face but only because it makes its functions easy to see It s a great watch even if you re not on a SEAL team
